A key part of CPT's mandate is peace education; the CPT program's primary program is the Peace Corps Peace Trainings, which are co-sponsored by Peace Corps and Peace Corps USA. These trains were set up in the 1980s at the request of CPT members; since then, the CPT trainings have evolved to include a variety of CPT-provided trainings of Peace Corps personnel and other groups working with violence reduction, violence prevention, or peace-building. CPT trainings are also co-sponsored by the Peace Corps and groups working directly on violence reduction, such as the Peace Corps Association of Western Washington and Western Washington University. The peace trainings provide trainees with information on the effectiveness of nonviolent methods and strategies to decrease violence in communities and communities where peace building is desired. These trainings help build CPT members' confidence in using peace-building methods to help prevent and reduce violence. CPT has a long tradition of working with the Peace Corps Peace Trainings, but has also worked in partnership with other U.S. government agencies for a number of programs, such as the Women's Peace Corps Volunteer Initiative (WP CVI); the Women's Peace Prize project; and the Peace Corps-CRC Volunteer Programs. CPT recently created a regional office within Peace Corps that supports the organization's mission of peace education, violence prevention, and conflict resolution. CPT in partnership with WRC and with the Washington Peace Institute, CPT's new regional office, promotes “peace through action” for youth, adolescents, college students and adults, in a variety of countries. In these program areas, CPT trains Peace Corps Volunteers to use strategies and models that help prevent youth violence. CPT works for Peace Corps Peace Trainings, particularly in Latin America, in partnership with the Washington Peace Institute. CPT also supports the work of groups based in Washington that work in areas of conflict, including the Washington Peace Corps Association of Western Washington and Western Washington University, the Violence Reduction Center in Seattle, the Peace Corps Youth Project, with youth of color, and in the Caribbean and Central America. CPT works across ethnic, religious, and racial lines, and provides training for Peace Corps Volunteers in an international manner.
