Posted on 26 November 2017 by Robert Boyd Last Tuesday afternoon, the physics department hosted and celebrated a very special graduation for my student, Akhtar Ahmed. Akhtar has been in my classes since the fall of 2012 and this summer, has gone back in time to when he was a pre-teen, learning with teachers and peers the basics of science, and helping me work on projects that have been coming together. During graduation year, his science team took home a gold medal at our annual DRS Science Fair, which is now a yearly tradition. Now, thanks to my research, this team should be working in the most advanced and demanding labs in the world, helping people in a lot more ways than most undergraduates would ever think. Akhtar has already been to MIT, New York University, and several universities in Europe, to help other scientists, and the world, with various science-related projects. In just 12 months, the engineering team he worked with took home an astounding six gold medals from DRS. And now, he will be working on one last project with us, which will be very beneficial to human civilization. Altar has a strong focus on health and health care innovation and will be joining a team of experts building software that will allow people to predict future illness using their gut microbes as inputs. The project is a joint-venture with Microsoft and Yale, including the first-ever gut microbiome app to be distributed to millions of people around the world. We have a lot of exciting news coming this fall. And all of our students worked so hard on their projects that they are now going to be doing even more research in their graduate programs. They were also able to do the first ever “Google Doodle” in physics, a science fair project where they turned a real world issue into a video game. The students were able to put themselves in the shoes of these cancer patients, and make real contributions to medical science in the process.
