The Health Effects of Mercury The toxic effects of mercury are well understood. The most common effect of mercury exposure is the accumulation of mercury and its compounds in the body. The accumulation of mercury is mainly through dietary sources, such as seafood, coal, fish, and shellfish (mainly oysters and clams). The concentration of mercury in the blood of individuals is usually very low, resulting in only a very small increase in liver enzymes in exposed individuals. In exposed people, the accumulation of mercury and its compounds in the brain, kidneys, skeletal muscle, heart, blood, brain, bones, and lungs can lead to neurological health problems that can be devastating. The main forms of mercury that are known to accumulate in the body are methyl-mercury (Meg), ethyl-mercury (egg), and total mercury (THM). In many countries, people have a natural protective effect against mercury poisoning. These natural protective factors, like iron or vitamin C (C), may protect people against mercury poisoning. But these supplements may not provide the optimal protection against mercury exposure. For this reason, people who routinely consume seafood are at risk of mercury poisoning. Over consuming fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel can expose people to higher levels of mercury than other forms of seafood. If you are pregnant, nursing, or plan to become pregnant, avoid eating seafood. Pregnant and nursing women need to avoid all seafood that have been frozen, smoked, or otherwise processed. Even eating small amounts of cooked seafood while pregnant can be toxic. Excess mercury exposure during pregnancy and infancy can lead to impaired brain development, behavioral disorders, learning difficulties, and reduced language abilities in children. Mercury exposure has also been linked to increased risk of cardiovascular problems, including heart attacks, stroke, and congenital heart disease in adults. All people, including those exposed to certain forms of mercury, need to minimize their exposure to the toxic metal. This means no more than one fish per day for pregnant women and two fish per week for breastfeeding women. This is especially important for low-income preschool children (ages 2-5). These fish include fatty tuna, swordfish, albacore tuna, and monkish. Eating more than these fish is more risky for the developing brain, and may also increase risk of developmental delays in children. Mercury in the Water The average person consumes about 1 milligram of mercury per day.
