The record extends back to 1000 AD and includes three periods of extended drought and one period of extended drought of less than two centuries. The last two droughts each extended for at least one century and were atypical as far as the timing of the droughts are concerned and, therefore, the period in which they occurred. The periods of drought were distinct from the normal annual cycle of the climate of western North America. This paper is the final part of a three part series on the evidence for extended drought in western North America during the last 2000 years. The first part presented the evidence by pollen, isotopes and tree rings used to reconstruct periods of droughts, including the last of the last 2200 years in the Great Basin. The second part discussed the timing of droughts and the third part presented the evidence for extreme climate variability. All these aspects of the evidence are shown to be consistent with a conclusion that drought in the Great Basin is associated with climatic variability consistent with an extreme climatic event such as a solar flare. A series of pollen analyses was carried out to examine the potential link between the current drought and the drought that occurred 3-5 thousand years ago, especially under very dry conditions. The first of these analyses considered the pollen record from five sites which have records beginning about 600 or 700 years ago. It found that the pollen record indicates significant changes over a 6000-year period from low to extremely low precipitation, with the major exception being a low to very high drought and dry drought interspersed with some periods of low (10-20 %) and higher (20-30 %) precipitation. The second large set of analyses, including pollen from the site in the high-elevation Sierra Mountains in Arizona, suggests that a severe drought of 10-20% over a millennium occurred about 10,000 years ago. The other site, from the central part of Nevada, has a pollen record starting in 1200 BC, which shows a period of dry and very dry.
