I often wished I could find out more about them. Unfortunately this is not as simple as it sounds. The National Register of Historic Properties (NRP) has established a policy of not allowing the publication of information about early houses. This policy is based on the belief that a public school or library would not provide the information if it could not confirm the authenticity of the building. The NRP also states that the public cannot benefit from this research unless the authenticity of the building is clearly established. A house that has been altered or altered badly will not be permitted for research, but a building that truly is historical or that does not have any modern changes will be acceptable. A house that is in a desirable area or that has been in a particular area for many years has a very high level of authenticity. Even if a house has been changed, the periodicity of the changes must always be noted. For example on a house that has not been lived in for 25 years, the periodicity of the changes should be noted. If a house has only minor changes, there would be little harm gained from allowing the historic value of the house, but it would not be allowed for research. This is the case with the home on the property. The roof was not replaced and the original bricks were not reused for the wall. The original trim around the house is removed, along with the wallboard that remained on the wall. Other changes do not require writing in the HISTORY section of the NRP site. The roof of the home was covered over with plywood panels. No brick has been reused. The wood trim is all that remains and in many areas the wood trim itself has been removed or replaced. In fact, the wall above the main doors has been completely removed. This is a very interesting change. It indicates the home may have been very recently, perhaps less than 20 years old. The house is located on an old field along the banks of the South River near North Richmond and was donated to the park system. It is in a very good condition. The main doors are intact, but the original brick wall that lined the front door has disappeared. No one can remember how long it was as a separate wall; this is an interesting aspect of the house. The original brick wall was replaced by a new wall built with a concrete base. The bricks were placed on top of the concrete in a straight line across the room. It is very simple and effective.
