K-State has always provided a solid foundation of course offerings that meet the needs of the K-State community. Our graduates are ready and willing to take the steps needed to develop a strong career and an exciting life. There are no shortage of opportunities for young people in this community. K-State's economy is strong, with strong gains in the construction and energy industries. As a result, the demand for qualified students in the liberal studies disciplines has doubled, creating a strong demand for faculty. For example, the Department of Political Science has expanded, increasing from four students to 13, and the Department of Economics has expanded from six students to nine. We are fortunate to have such a bright community of students, teachers and professors. This strong climate has created a wonderful atmosphere for the faculty. For example, a new Assistant Professor and several other new associate professors, with expertise in other fields, have signed as a service to the department. Faculty in all disciplines and academic areas are actively involved in the work of the department and contribute to it in various way. They contribute ideas, resources and their time. They also serve as ambassadors for the department. The new President has been very supportive of our growth and is committed to the continued success of the Department of Economics and the College of Liberal Arts. The K-State faculty and students share the same values: the ability to create and implement new programs as they learn, contribute ideas and engage in research; the intellectual honesty so essential to an atmosphere of scholarship; and the dedication to excellence. I would like to invite the entire K-State community to join me in an open forum to celebrate the successful completion of the third year of my administration and in recognition of the important contributions that the Department of Economics has made since the beginning of my tenure. For the purposes of this open forum, I would like to invite everyone to reflect on the great accomplishments of the year and to consider the future plans which each of you will make. There will clearly be more to come in the coming year. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. I. A. GARDNER K-STATE ECON M AIN C E N T S T U D I T I O N S E N T S On Dec. 10, 2001, K-State President Robert J. Born and K-State Faculty Senate President David C. Janet invited a special panel of distinguished and knowledgeable participants for his inaugural address at the inauguration of Chancellor R. Don Thompson.
