Start by writing the date on the line provided at the top right corner of the check. Be sure to use the proper format, such as MM/DD/YYYY.

In the "Pay to the Order of" line, write the name of the person or entity you are paying. Make sure to spell their name correctly and use the full legal name if possible.

On the numeric amount line, write the amount of the check using numbers only. Be sure to include dollars and cents if applicable.

On the long written amount line, write out the amount of the check using words. Start with the dollar amount, followed by "and" and the cents amount. Be sure to write clearly and legibly.

In the memo line, you can write a note or description of what the check is for. This is optional but can be helpful for record-keeping purposes.

Sign your name on the signature line at the bottom right corner of the check. Make sure your signature matches the one on file with your bank.

Optional: If you want to split the payment between two different accounts or parties, you can indicate this by marking "One" and "Both" in the appropriate boxes on the left side of the check.

After you have completed all the necessary steps, tear off the check along the perforated edge and keep a copy for your records if needed.
