This project uses both the original and the revised standard (2nd revision) of the method of forming the sleeve (and/or cuff) on a leather garment. The process begins with the leather piece placed across to form the collar (top) and back. After that the side panels of the collar are formed using a standard form (but the back of the collar needs to be trimmed (at the collar-end/side-end) to fit snugly to the body of the jacket (below collar). Then the back of the piece is closed with the leather side panels and then the side panels of the cuff are attached to finish the sleeves. (After using the sleeve panel cut side down for the first time, check the fit of the piece. It might have to be reshaped a bit when you make the next cut. Remember...the cuff can't be too short at the neck as the body is curved. However, if you want the end to be “a little longer” than the middle, a simple extension of that can be made on the cuff) A few simple measurements are taken to make sure that the piece fits well when you cut your panels and that you have enough fabric. The sleeve piece is now cut and sewn to the leather side panel and the cuff panel (only the first panel should be sewn to the leather side panel in this case). A second leather panel is then attached to the front of the piece and this is used as the base for the armhole trim. This section is then attached to the back of the side panels (not the side panel, the side panel is attached later on). The “double” leather panel should form the bottom part of the armhole. Note: the sleeve should be slightly longer than the armhole. The trim (the small panel at the shoulder) is attached to the armhole, above this “double” leather panel. The armhole is then trimmed on the side of the side panel and then trimmed a bit further down the side. This will give the desired widths on either side of the shoulder (with a bit of extra fabric between the shoulder and the armhole, to take the “extra” width). The final length of the sleeve and cuff pieces are cut to form the side panels on the back of the jacket (if this is desired) and then the side panels cut on the back of the jacket are sewn to the side panels on the front of the jacket, thus finishing this section.
