Toward the Future of Intelligent Transportation Systems A joint research project undertaken by Japanese and US researchers is looking to use new materials to build self-driving automobiles with more than 70 percent savings in energy consumption by 2050. In a paper published this week in the Journal of Industrial Ecology, a team of researchers from the Universities of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and MIT conclude that such autonomous vehicles might be able to be built for 5,000 or less -- making it a cheap solution for the global car market. “In other words, we developed new materials that are capable of building an 'energy-saving car' without any significant environmental impact,” said Dr. Chiara Sakai of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Assistant Professor at the Center for Energy, Environment and Materials at the School of Engineering, in a release about the paper. The paper titled “Self-Driving Automobile Energy Consumption Analysis” (subscription required) outlines that they set out to see if a lightweight, bendable and flexible metal alloy could be developed that would be useful to self-driving automobiles. The material, which is known as borosilicate glass, is believed to be both strong and transparent to light. To test their theory, the researchers designed an impact simulator in which several car batteries were strapped onto and then pushed together to simulate a collision. At the same time, the car's autonomous computer was simultaneously running simulations of how much energy the car was using at different points during various times of the day and night. The paper notes that this testing showed more than an 80 percent battery savings by 2050 when compared to their previous assumptions. The team then used their materials and the borosilicate glass to create a model car with a 20-inch touch screen, which was then equipped with several sensors that collected and analyzed data from road hazards along the simulated route. The car's software analyzed the data and predicted the time that would be optimal for the best collision avoidance maneuvers. “In this way, a car that is 50 percent energy efficient will be 30 percent cheaper,” Sakai said to The Japan Times. “In addition, we can also provide a lot of safety benefits if we combine high energy-saving with high safety. An autonomous vehicle needs to be very smart so that it can take safety initiatives such as avoiding a major crash and avoiding an unexpected accident, rather than focusing on avoiding a minor one.
