If you're entitled to help with your health costs, you will receive a HC2 or HC3 certificate. Certificates are valid for 12 months unless you're: a final year student or a student on a 1 year course, your certificate is valid until the last day of the academic year.
How do I get an NHS exemption card?
If you're entitled to a certificate because of your medical condition, speak to your GP or doctor. They'll give you an application form. You'll get a paper certificate in the post within 10 working days of us receiving your application.
Does a HC2 form expire?

How long does it take to get a HC2?
The outcome of your application We'll normally assess your application within 18 working days of receiving your form. If you're entitled to help you will get either an: HC2 certificate for full help with health costs, including free NHS prescriptions.
How do I update my HC2?
If your HC2 or HC3 certificate has expired, you need to complete a new HC1 application form and apply again. We cannot accept photocopies of a previous HC1, even if your circumstances have not changed since your last application.
Where can I get an HC2 form?
You can ask for a new one and the NHS will send it to you within 10 working days. You can contact the NHS either through their online form or by phone at the number 0300 330 1343.
