Questions & answers

Most clay shooters will use a shotgun with a barrel diameter of around 18.5 mm. This is known as a 12 bore or 12-gauge shotgun. Smaller diameter guns are also used (16 or 20 gauge) as these are lighter in weight (often suitable for younger or smaller framed shooters).
Skeet targets are relatively close and easily broken, so #9 or #8s are ideal. You don't need a hard-hitting load to break a clay target at close range, so you want lots of little pellets in the air punching at that target.
The common rule of thumb for clay shooters is to use 8 shot for any shooting stands 35 yards and under. Save the 7.5 shot loads for longer shots over 35 yards or windy days where shot drift could affect your aim.
The 12- gauge, however, is the most versatile and widely used shotgun. Other gauges available include 10, 16 and 28. The rules of skeet shooting allow for the use of any gauge smaller than 12 for shooting 12-gauge events.
