Princeton University and New York University are examples of schools that have accreditation by the United States Department of Education.
accreditation. Accreditation is the act of granting credit or recognition, especially to an educational institution that maintains suitable standards. If you earn a teaching certificate, then you have an accreditation to teach. Usually you'll hear this word in relation to institutions like colleges and universities.
Accredited is similar: If you're a school or a doctor or another kind of professional, being accredited means you've been tested and evaluated by an outside person or committee and these specialists agree that you meet the standards of that profession.
Accreditation is important because it: Helps determine if an institution meets or exceeds minimum standards of quality. Helps students determine acceptable institutions for enrollment. Assist institutions in determining acceptability of transfer credits.
Accreditation can offer several important benefits: It puts a stamp of approval on graduates: graduating from an accredited institution indicates that graduates are expected to be ready to practice at a certain level. It affords the opportunity for continuous improvement of institutions and educational programs.
Examples of certify in a Sentence A judge must certify the contract. The document has been certified by the court. The car dealer certifies each car before it is sold.
In general terms, accreditation is a process of being certified as a credible and authentic entity. Being accredited means an organization has proven itself as a legitimate establishment in their field. In some fields, such as education, it is not a quick process nor is it an easy process. Strict standards must be met.
Definitions and Purposes of Accreditation. Accreditation in higher education is a collegial process based on self and peer assessment. Its purpose is the improvement of academic quality and public accountability. This continuing quality control process occurs usually every five to ten years.
