Title IV of the Higher Education Act (HE) authorizes programs that provide financial assistance to students to assist them in obtaining a postsecondary education at certain institutions of higher education (Ives). Certified by ED as eligible to participate in Title IV programs.
What is a Title IV Credit Balance? You have a Title IV credit balance if your federal financial aid exceeds your charges for tuition, fees, university housing and meal plans for a term.
Title IV is a term that refers to federal financial aid funds. To prevent an outstanding balance due, students or parents may authorize Notre Dame to apply excess funds to the student account for non-allowable charges by signing an authorization form (below).
Title IV financial aid is federally funded aid such as Federal Well Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SMOG), Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Direct Loans.
The U.S. Department of Education requires that Title IV funds be applied to specific allowable charges. If your total of Title IV funds exceeds the total of these qualifying charges, the University must refund that excess to you unless you give permission to do otherwise.
