This type of cell reference is called a relative reference. When we copy (Ctrl + C) the formula in the image above, and paste (Ctrl + V) it into another cell, you'll notice that the cell references change from the B column to the D column, so the total is different.

These are called “relative” cell references, since they change relative to where you copy the formula. If you do not want cell references to change when you copy a formula, then make those cell references absolute cell references.
Select the cell containing the formula that you want to copy. In the Clipboard group of the Home tab, click Copy. Do one of the following: Verify that the cell references in the formula produce the result that you want. Select the cell that contains the formula.
Select the cell from which you want to copy the format. Press Ctrl + C to copy the selected cell to the Clipboard. Select the cell(s) to which the format should be applied. In Excel 2016, 2013 or 2010, press Shift + F10, S, R, and then click Enter.
