Conditional Access in Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) controls access to cloud apps based on specific conditions that you specify. To allow access, you create Conditional Access policies that allow or block access based on whether the requirements in the policy are met.
Conditional access is a set of policies and configurations that control which devices have access to various services and data sources. In the Microsoft environment, conditional access works with the Office 365 suite of products, as well as with SaaS apps which are configured in Azure Active Directory.
Conditional Access is available with the following Microsoft products available through the CSP program: Microsoft 365 Enterprise E3.
Sign in to the Microsoft Endpoint Manager admin center. Select Devices > Conditional Access > Policies > New policy. Under Assignments, select Users and groups. On the Include tab, identify the users or groups that this Conditional Access policy applies to. Select Done.
Running the tool You can find the What If tool on the Conditional Access — Policies page in the Azure portal. To start the tool, in the toolbar on top of the list of policies, click What If. Before you can run an evaluation, you must configure the settings.
Sign in to the Azure portal as a global administrator, security administrator, or Conditional Access administrator. Browse to Azure Active Directory > Security > Conditional Access. Select New policy. Give your policy a name. Under Assignments, select Users and groups.
Legacy authentication is a term that refers to an authentication request made by: Older Office clients that do not use modern authentication (for example, Office 2010 client) Any client that uses legacy mail protocols such as IMAP/SMTP/POP3.
Password hash synchronization (PHS) Password hash synchronization is a sign-in method that's used as part of a hybrid identity solution. To accomplish a hybrid identity solution with PHS, a hash of a user's on-premise Active Directory (AD) password is synchronized to a cloud-based Azure AD instance.
Basic authentication in Exchange Online uses a username and a password for client access requests. Blocking Basic authentication can help protect your Exchange Online organization from brute force or password spray attacks.
To disable Modern Authentication, set the REG_DWORD key to 0 at HBCU\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Office\\15.0\\Common\\Identity\\Enabled. By the way, the 15.0 in the registry hive refers to Office 2013. Once enabled, Office 2013 clients will be able to use the features supported by Microsoft Authentication (MFA, CBA, etc.).
