The initial consonant blend is a cluster of letters that makes a distinctive sound at the beginning of the word. Each letter in the word is pronounced individually, but in a way that they blend together flawlessly.
When you have a series of consonants together, that seem to do their own thing, we refer to this as a blend (consonant blend). These blends can be used to form endless words. If a blend is at the front of the word, we refer to it as “initial”. If the blend is at the end of the word, we call it “final”.
Skill: final consonant blends: st, SK, SP, ND, NT, NK, mp, rd, LD, LP, OK, Lt, of, pt, ft, ct. Initial consonant blends (beginning) and final (ending) consonant blends appear throughout these lessons. Blends are consonants whose sounds blends together.

Show the students the Consonant Endings video. List NK, OK, NT, MP, and ND on the board. Have your students list the words they heard in the video. Ask the students if they know any words that rhyme with the words listed. Categorize the words according to their consonant endings.
Final consonant blends appear at the end of words. The consonant blends included are NK, st, ND, mp and ft.
