811 in Your State Each state has its own 811 call center to help you get digging. Choose your state to find information about your area. An 811 representative will take information about your project and notify appropriate utility companies to mark buried lines, so you can dig safely around them!
The law, in all states, generally provides that anyone excavate must call the 811 utility-locate hotline before digging begins to have all utilities located and marked. But as of January 1, the law has changed.
Always call 811 a few days before digging, regardless of the depth or familiarity with the property. Plan ahead. Call on Monday or Tuesday for work planned for an upcoming weekend, providing ample time for the approximate location of lines to be marked.
California State Law Says, You Must Contact Dialect Before You Dig! Failure to do so can result in fines up to fifty thousand dollars, and you could be charged with the repair costs of damaged underground facility.
You can use Dialect Direct or call 811 or 800-422-4133 at least two (2) working days NOT including the date of notification (4216.2(b)) before you plan to start digging, we will notify all our members (i.e. the utilities) that own and maintain underground lines in the area.
There is no cost to you even the call is free so Call 811 Before You Dig. Follow this link for more information on 811. If you can't connect to the one-call center by dialing 811, dial 1-888-258-0808 to get a toll-free direct-dial number for the one-call center in your area.

White: Proposed Excavation. Pink: Temporary Survey Markings. Red: Electric Power Lines, Cables, Conduit and Lighting Cables. Yellow: Gas, Oil, Steam, Petroleum, or Gaseous Materials.
What about my private underground lines? The notified utility owner-members will not mark privately owned underground lines. These include but are not limited to; invisible fencing, sprinkler systems, well and septic systems and their power or electric service, water and sewer pipes from the meter to your home, etc.
If you hit an underground utility line while digging you could harm yourself and those around you and disrupt vital services to an entire neighborhood or community. You could also be responsible for fines and repair costs. Now you can simply dial 811 to reach the one-call center, regardless of where you are digging.

In North Carolina, the tolerance zone is 24 inches on either side of the utility locate marks. Excavators are responsible for finding and avoiding all facilities down to the depth they are working.
