Click in your document where you want to create the table of contents. If you'd like it to appear on its own page, insert a page break (Ctrl+Enter) before and after inserting the ToC. Click the References tab. Choose the style of Table of Contents you wish to insert.

Go to References > Table of Contents > Insert Table of Contents. Select Modify. In the Styles list, click the level that you want to change and then click Modify. In the Modify Style pane make your changes. Select OK to save changes.
Click where you want to insert the table of contents usually near the beginning of a document. Click References > Table of Contents and then choose an Automatic Table of Contents style from the list.
Apply the built-in Heading styles to the headings in your text. In Word 2003 and before: Insert > Reference > Tables and Indexes. Click on the Table of Contents Tab. Click OK. In Word 2007 and Word 2010: References > Table of Contents > choose an option from the menu.
