Force field analysis is a technique that can be used for identifying, discussing and documenting the factors that support or oppose a change initiative. For any successful change to occur, the driving forces must outdo the hindering forces, thereby shifting the equilibrium.
Force Field Analysis helps you to think about the pressures for and against a decision or a change. It was developed by Kurt Lewin. Alternatively, you can use your analysis to think about how you can strengthen the forces that support the change and weaken the forces opposing it, so that the change is more successful.
The Force Field Analysis (FFA) is a tool which can be used to assess the forces for change and the forces against change, and evaluate whether a given changes initiative is feasible in the current climate. Use it to assess several project ideas and determine which have the greatest potential for success.
According to its developer, Kurt Lewin, Force Field Analysis comes to use when “An issue is held in balance by the interaction of two opposing sets of forces those seeking to promote change (driving forces) and those attempting to maintain the status (restraining forces).”
Purpose: Force Field Analysis is a general tool for systematically analyzing the factors found in complex problems. It frames problems in terms of factors or pressures that support the status quo (restraining forces) and those pressures that support change in the desired direction (driving forces).
