Once you have the VIN number, you can search for a vehicle's history online. Vehicle history.gov and Instating are both good websites to find title information on used cars.
Obtain a limited history report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Get a free VIN check through The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICE) Third-party database sites that pull vehicle history data from national databases.
Locate your Registration card. This should contain your vehicle information, including your title number. The title number is 8 digits long and can be located on the line above the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
You can use the online service to determine if a title certificate was processed or a lien was recorded on a title certificate. To check the status online, you must have the vehicle identification number (VIN), the model year of the vehicle, and the make of the vehicle.
You don't need your registration to find out the title number of your car. You can simply find it on the Certificate of Title itself. It's normally printed at the top or bottom of the document. But, the title number doesn't contain any valuable information about the vehicle or its owner.
Locate your Registration card. Look at your Registration renewal invitation, if you cannot locate your registration card. Apply for a duplicate title, if you are unable to complete the above steps. Bring the application along with your driver's license or other form of ID to your local DMV service center.
Go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If you know the VIN number of the car, you can fill out a form to officially request information about the car's current owner. Go to the local police department with the car's license plate number. Hire an online private investigator.
Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles of your state. Furnish the VIN number of the vehicle and request a title record from the department. If the vehicle has a license plate from another state, contact the Department of Motor Vehicles of the state and request a title record.
