For most of its long history, Microsoft Word has used a proprietary format for its saved files, DOC. Starting in 2007 with the updated version of Word (and Microsoft Office), the default save format was changed to DOCX. Both are relatively open, but DOCX is more efficient and creates smaller, less corruptible files.
Go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Set Default by App, scroll down to Microsoft Office listings, choose each one and set it as Default. This should claim the default files that Office opens. If not Set Default by File type and set each Office file type to it's feature in Microsoft Office.

Right click on one of your Word documents, go to Properties, and in the General tab, click Change and select the program you'd like to open word docs with from this point on.
