Completing Form I-9 for Remote Hire. Employers may designate an authorized representative to fill out Forms I-9 on behalf of their company, including personnel officers, foremen, agents or notary public.

There are some key differences between Form I-9 and the E-Verify program: By contrast, E-Verify requires a social security number. The I-9 does not require a photo on identity documents, whereas E-Verify does. Lastly, the I-9 must be used to re-verify expired employment authorization, whereas E-Verify forbids doing so.
The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986 requires all U.S. employers, regardless of size, to complete a Form I-9 upon hiring a new employee to work in the United States. The federal government uses E-Verify to enhance enforcement of federal immigration law.

Why? Because most employers will verify your employment history to one degree or another before finalizing a job offer. At the very least, they will learn your previous job titles and job descriptions, your start and end date for each job, and your salary history in locations where it is legal to ask.

Give your name and title, and request the contact person listed on the application. If the person is not available, leave a call back number, name and good time to reach you. Greet the contact person when he gets on the line. Ask him to verify the former employee's job title, duties, attendance and ending salary.
