On the Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Line Numbers. Note: If your document is divided into sections, and you want to add line numbers to the entire document, you first need to select the document. Click Select in the Editing group on the Home tab, and then click Select All. Or press CTRL+A.
Line numbering is applied from the Layout tab. Apply some dummy text then move the bottom margin or adjust the font size until you get the required number of displayed lines per page.
Instead of searching and replacing all the figure numbers in the text, click “Edit” → “Select All” (or, Ctrl + A), which select the entire document, then, press “F9”. This updates all the figure number automatically.
There's no direct option for paragraph numbering in Word that works similarly to the line numbering feature. The workaround is to use numbered lists instead. It's not a good workaround, but it's what Microsoft leaves us with. Select the paragraphs then choose Numbering to make a numbered list.
To update an individual reference, click on it and press F9 or right-click and select Update Field. To update all references in a document, select Edit Select All (or press Ctrl A), then press F9 or right-click and select Update Field. You can set Word to always update cross-references before printing your document.
