To sign your application electronically, click the “Log in" button on the FAFSA.gov home page to log in, and then click the “Provide Signatures" button. The student (and parent if required) will enter own their FSA ID and click “sign". You and your parent will each create your own FSA ID accounts only once.
Your signature is always required. When making corrections to your FAFSA online, you must sign electronically with your FSA ID. If you are a dependent student, and you do correct your parents' information, then a parent is required to sign your corrected FAFSA.
The fastest way for you (the parent) to sign your FAFSA is electronically with your own FSA ID. There are two other, slower options to sign the FAFSA: Print a signature page, sign it, and mail it to the address on the page. Your student's application will be processed once your signature is received.
Click "Forgot User Name" if you have forgotten your FSA ID. You cannot apply an electronic signature. Because the parent FSA ID cannot be authenticated, you must click “Previous" then select a different option for signing this FAFSA.”
Parent income only affects financial aid for dependent students. For the FAFSA, dependency is based on the federal government's criteria, not whether the parent claimed the student as a dependent on last year's tax return. Parent income does not affect financial aid at all for independent students.
Submit the FAFSA without signatures. Your student's application will be partially processed without signatures, and he or she will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) within 3-5 days. In order for the FAFSA to complete, you'll need to return later to sign electronically.
If the FAFSA was processed online but printed at the end to send in an actual signature page through the mail, then you can expect your SAR within two weeks, still arriving via email address provided. It will come through USPS if you did not provide an email address.
When you receive your SAR, look on the first page next to the letters EFC (which stand for Expected Family Contribution). If you do not see any numbers after the letters EFC, your application has been rejected and needs correction. You might also see a letter C after the letters EFC.
If you submitted a paper FAFSA, your application will be processed within 7-10 days. Once your application is processed, you will receive a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR), which summarizes the information you provided on your FAFSA. Review your SAR and make sure all the information is complete and accurate.
