Put the mouse pointer over the bottom right-hand corner of the cell until it's a black plus sign. Click and hold the left mouse button, and drag the plus sign over the cells you want to fill. And the series is filled in for you automatically using the AutoFill feature.
If you establish a pattern by typing the full name in column C, Excel's Flash Fill feature will fill in the rest for you based on the pattern you provide. Enter the full name in cell C2, and press ENTER. Go to Data > Flash Fill, or press Ctrl+E. Excel will sense the pattern you provided in C2, and fill the cells below.
Insert a new column adjacent to the column with your source data. In the first cell of a newly added column, type the desired value. Start typing in the next cell, and if Excel senses a pattern, it will show a preview of data to be auto-filled in the below cells. Press the Enter key to accept the preview. Done!
To use the Fill command on the ribbon, enter the first value in a cell and select that cell and all the adjacent cells you want to fill (either down or up the column or to the left or right across the row). Then, click the Fill button in the Editing section of the Home tab. Select Series from the drop-down menu.
And there is a handy shortcut key for Flash Fill. Simply highlight the cells containing the pattern as well as the empty cells you would like filled, and then press Ctrl + E. It's that easy! Excel will fill in the cells with Flash Fill.
In most situations, Flash Fill kicks in automatically as soon as Excel establishes a pattern in the data you are entering. If a preview does not show up, you can activate Flash Fill manually in this way: Fill in the first cell and press Enter. Click the Flash Fill button on the Data tab or press the Ctrl + E shortcut.
First Steps With Flash Fill is a close relative of Auto Fill, but it performs a slightly different function. Rather than continuing a series of data, it can source information from other cells and present it with your desired formatting.
