In this article, we will talk about a new technique I developed for the Microsoft Direct Rendering Manager that allows you to create a “high level” DirectX 11-rendered “base” for a custom XPS document, and then have the XPS document render “lower level” DirectX 9-based scenes. There is also an “intermediate” path where you can still create a base XPS, but leave the final rendering engine completely up to the graphics card vendor, as these two technologies (DGI and Direct3D) are the same architecture. These “alternative” renderers are the “best of both worlds”: you get the advantage of all the latest graphics hardware, and you don't have to install DirectX, or the entire Operating System, to run the final rendering of the XPS. We can use DirectX 12 and Direct3D 10 just like any other DirectX API, but you don't get access to the new hardware features like asynchronous compute, texture compression, and hardware shaders.
