For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
California allows Notaries to identify the signer through one or two credible identifying witnesses under certain situations. A credible witness is an individual who personally knows the signer and can vouch for the signer's identity to the Notary.
All states that allow the notary to use one credible witness have the requirement that the credible witness must personally know the (signer) of the document, and the notary must personally know the credible witness.
If you personally know a credible identifying witness you may also know that the witness also knows the signer. Your only duty is to properly administer the oath or affirmation compelling the witness to swear or affirm that he or she knows the signer.
A credible identifying witness is an individual who knows and can verify the identity of a signer. The witness appears at the time of the notarization and takes an oath or affirmation before the Notary that the signer is who they claim to be but lacks other forms of ID.
According to PayScale, a notary public earns an average of nearly $13 per hour. However, your income can vary, depending on your location and the type of documents you most often notarize. You might be able to command as much as $22 per hour.
Signature witnessing means a notarial act in which an individual: (a) appears in person before a notary and presents a document; (b) provides the notary satisfactory evidence of the individual's identity, or is personally known to.
Generally, the person you choose to witness a document should have no financial or other interest in an agreement. A neutral third party is someone not related to either party and who does not benefit from the document. A witness does not have to read the document, but they must be present when it is signed.
So if you need a document notarized in California, it's possible to contact your family member. A notary public may not notarize a signature on a document if the person whose signature is to be notarized is the spouse, son, daughter, mother, or father of the notary public.
It is not legal. If a document is notarized without the person signing it being present, the notarization is invalid. Both the person in whose name the document is being notarized and the notary could face all kinds of legal problems, both civil and criminal.
Mobile notaries OK Care not allowed by law to notarize documents for their family members. Notarizing documents from family members or where a mobile notary OK stands to profit is not necessarily illegal and unethical, but it may draw some items the Oklahoma City notary public has just notarized into question.
In California, a notary public is not prohibited from notarizing for relatives or others, unless doing so would provide a direct financial or beneficial interest to the notary public. So if you need a document notarized in California, it's possible to contact your family member.
In New York it's not illegal to notarize your daughter's signature or the signatures of the character references, but the ANNA would not recommend it. NNA members have unlimited access to our expertly trained ANNA Hotline counselors to help you with all of your notarial questions.
The short answer is no, a notary public cannot legally notarize his or her own document. They verify the signer's identity, watch as the signer signs the document, and lastly the notary places his or her official seal on the document (note: some states do not require seals).
A notary public who has a direct or indirect financial (or other beneficial) interest in a document may not notarize such a document. The better practice is not to notarize for a spouse or family member in order to preserve the integrity of the notarization and to prevent a challenge to the notarization.
The notarization process is typically simple. You present a document to a notary public and sign it in their presence. After that, the notary officially notarizes the document using an official stamp, writes in the date, and adds their own signature.
