Justified text is spaced so the left and right sides of the text block both have a clean edge. Compared to left-aligned text, justification gives text a cleaner, more formal look. Justification works by adding white space between the words in each line so all the lines are the same length.

Rivers, or text rivers can be avoided or fixed by adjusting the hyphenation and justification settings, commonly called the H&J settings, which can be found in most high-end creative design suites. Also note that H&J settings can vary from one program to the next.

A Note About Format and Font. When writing business letters, you must pay special attention to the format and font used. The most common layout of a business letter is known as block format.
