Get out of Excel. Right-click anywhere in your Windows desktop. Choose To personalize from the Context menu. Click Window Color and Appearance. Click the Open Classic Appearance Properties for More Color Options link. Click the Advanced button. Using the Item drop-down list, choose the Selected Items option.
Start with selecting the cells the background color of which you want to change. Create a new formatting rule by clicking Conditional Formatting > New Rule on the Home tab. Highlight the data range you want to format. Choose Format > Conditional formatting in the top menu. Choose Custom formula is rule. Enter your formula, using the $ sign to lock your column reference.
