In general, PCI compliance is required by credit card companies to make online transactions secure and protect them against identity theft. Any merchant that wants to process, store or transmit credit card data is required to be PCI-compliant, according to the PCI Compliance Security Standard Council.
Compliance with the PCI security standards is enforced by the major payment card brands who established the Council: American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, MasterCard Worldwide and Visa Inc.
Visa named the standard the Cardholder Information Security Program and implemented it in 2001. MasterCard, American Express, and Discover quickly followed suit, founding their own unique security programs. Merchants that accepted more than one type of credit card had to be compliant with multiple security programs.
