811 in Your State Each state has its own 811 call center to help you get digging. Choose your state to find information about your area. An 811 representative will take information about your project and notify appropriate utility companies to mark buried lines, so you can dig safely around them!
The law, in all states, generally provides that anyone excavate must call the 811 utility-locate hotline before digging begins to have all utilities located and marked. But as of January 1, the law has changed.
Before You Dig. What is 811? When you make the free call to 811 a few days before you dig, you'll help prevent unintended consequences such as injury to you or your family, damage to your property, utility service outages to the entire neighborhood and potential fines and repair costs.
There is no allotted depth before a person needs to call 811. Whether you are just planting small shrubs or installing fences, CGA says any time you are putting a shovel in the ground you need to call due to the fact that many utilities are buried just a few inches below the surface.
California State Law Says, You Must Contact Dialect Before You Dig! Failure to do so can result in fines up to fifty thousand dollars, and you could be charged with the repair costs of damaged underground facility.

Keep your trenches or holes at least 18 inches away from 8-1-1 markings. The tools used to locate underground wires are not always precise, and 8-1-1 guidelines say that holes or trenches should be kept at least 18 inches away from either side of marked lines.

Direct Burial Installation The minimum depth requirement of a direct burial cable is 24 inches, except when installed under a concrete slab with a minimum thickness of 2 inches. In this case, the cable can be installed at only 18 inches deep.
If you hit an underground utility line while digging you could harm yourself and those around you and disrupt vital services to an entire neighborhood or community. You could also be responsible for fines and repair costs. Now you can simply dial 811 to reach the one-call center, regardless of where you are digging.
