As many of you know, the current Docs Editors chat functionality is built on Google Talk, which we previously announced will be shutting down at the end of June. There will be no in-app promotion. Users will simply see the chat button below appear in Docs, Sheets, and Slides when collaborators are in the document.
Chats in Google Docs aren't stored anywhere, so there's no way to recover a chat that's been closed out. If you want ongoing communications with your team, the chat feature in a document is not the best way to do it. I'd suggest using Google Hangouts Chat instead.
Chat with others in a file your computer, open a document, spreadsheet, or presentation. At the top right, click Chat. . This feature won't be available if you're the only one in the file. Enter your message in the chat box. When you're finished, at the top right of the chat window, click Close.
The beauty of the Google Docs chat feature is that if two or more coworkers are collaborating over the same document, messages are sent and received within the document itself.
To turn off chat inside Docs, Sheets, and Slides:Sign in to your Google Admin console. From the Admin console Home page, go to Apps Google Workspace. Click Service Status. To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organizational unit selected. Select Both turned off. Click Save.
