The Warranty Usually Transfers In other words, if you buy a new car and later sell it to someone else, the warranty will still remain valid for the new owner until the end of the original warranty period. There's one important catch, however. The warranty is based on the in-service date and not the model year.
What most consumers don't realize is that these legendary warranties aren't transferable to a new owner in many cases. Fortunately, the warranty doesn't become completely invalid when a new owner buys the car as a used vehicle. It just changes to 5 years or 60,000 miles of powertrain coverage.
General Motors' five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is fully transferable to new owners, also with no deductible on covered work. So are the five-year/60,000-mile warranties offered by Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, and Ford. Chrysler's warranties are a little more difficult.
As a general rule, extended car warranties that are bought through dealers are transferable in terms of both time and mileage. Depending on the type of vehicle and the current mileage on the newly bought vehicle, most warranties bought through auto warranty brokers are also transferable.
Ford Factory Warranty. This warranty provides coverage for the engine, transmission and more. It includes no deductibles for repairs, and the warranty is fully transferable to future owners at no cost. Warranty is fully transferable.
The standard Honda warranty is transferable to the new owner via the vehicle, only if the vehicle is less than 3 years old and the mileage is less than 36,000 miles. If the used vehicle is out of warranty, then it is not covered. The warranty is not transferable to the next new Honda vehicle that you purchase.
