After the 30 days, you're SAG-AFTRA Eligible and I must join.
The Plan provides a comprehensive package of health care benefits to participants and their eligible dependents. Earned active eligibility for health coverage under the Plan is established through employment with producers who have signed Collective Bargaining Agreements with SAHARA.
The Screen Actors Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) is an American labor union representing approximately 160,000 film and television actors, journalists, radio personalities, recording artists, singers, voice actors, and other media professionals worldwide.
Professional actors get health insurance benefits through our union’s.) In the U.S., that's SAG-AFTRA or Actors' Equity. If at some point an actor fails to meet those requirements, their coverage will lapse (with some exceptions to do with COBRA and service/retirement plans.)
In the industry, actors and other movie workers typically get insurance through their unions. For instance, according to data from SAG-AFTRA, the country's largest union for actors, broadcasters and recording artists, only about 15% of members qualify for health insurance through the union.
At least for TV and film actors, the Screen Actors Guild that nearly all actors are a part of provides health and other kinds of insurance. Just like the rest of us. Through the state, unions, employers, self indemnified, or private purchase.
The first major benefit to having an Equity card, as an actor, is that many professional auditions are Equity-only calls. Non-members are allowed to attend, but with no guarantee of being seen. Equity members are allowed to attend these Equity-only calls without these restrictions.
The majority of working musicians have a limited set of choices when obtaining health insurance coverage. Some labor unions and organizations in particular AFTRA, AFM, NARAS, BMI and ASCAP have recognized this problem and made health insurance plans available to their members.
