There are no official laws that require employers to verify employment on former employees. However, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission stipulates that it's illegal to refuse to provide information based on race, sex, color and other non-job-related factors.
How far back does an employment background check go? Typically, employers requesting an employment background screening on an applicant will request a seven-year history, although some states allow reporting information of up to 10 years.
If you suspect the background check has been unable to verify dates of employment for a certain employer, contact the background check company and ask what you can do to facilitate the process. They may ask for additional information, ask you to contact the employer directly, or request copies of your W-2s.
How Is Employment Verification Done? First, the job applicant has to sign a waiver for you to legally run an employment verification check on them. Next, the company that you hired to do the background check gets in touch with the former employer of the job applicant to confirm their job history.
Your employer cannot legally refuse verification of employment status to a creditor. However, they are not required to include any additional information beyond your job status, location of employment, and current insurance benefits (if your debt is medical in nature).
Debt collectors can contact your employer to confirm your employment. They might get your employer's contact information from your credit report, the original creditor, or from another third-party. A debt collector can only contact your employer once unless the employer gives permission for them to make contact again.

These can be paper copies or PDFs. Some lenders will go through your bank statements line-by-line checking for anything that suggests unusual behavior.
There are two main methods mortgage lenders use to verify self-employed income: via full accounts, or by SA302 year-end tax calculations (usually along with the corresponding tax year overview) from HM Revenue & Customs. Some lenders may ask to see both accounts and SA302s.
