This paper considers the general relationship between a network's “transparency” (i.e., how transparent a network is to all external observers, e.g., through the Tor network) and its ability to serve as a secure communication channel. This paper argues that this “transparency” should not be considered unique to the Tor network, and the “self-sealing” nature of its architecture is one of the many unique features of the Tor network. The research presented in this paper was carried out on the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and email communication channels on the Tor network from 2007 to 2011. The Tor network is used to create and control a “dark web,” which operates outside the typical, accessible Internet, and can provide secure communication with only a few users. This paper analyzes data from a single Internet relay, whose architecture is unique to the Tor network. Data from the Tor network was analyzed via the application of linear algebra to the set of Tor relays and their users, and a number of metrics were developed to compare data across three network architectures, in order to better understand the characteristics of a network. The network was divided into two parts: a “relay zone” of approximately 3000 relays that are capable of forming private networks, and a “normal zone” of approximately 2500 relays..
