IRS requests personal (individual) federal income tax returns, such as Form 1040 ("Long Form"), 1040A ("Short Form") and 1040EZ ("Easy Form"), annually. The due date for individual tax returns is April 15 the next year after the reported period. If April 15 falls on Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the returns are due the next business day.
Any person engaged in a trade or business, including a corporation, partnership, individual, estate, and trust, who makes reportable transactions during the calendar year, must file information returns to report those transactions to the IRS. Persons required to file information returns to the IRS must also furnish statements to the other party to the transaction, such as recipients of income.
A fiduciary income tax return is used to report the income of estates and trusts, including that of electing small business trusts. Fiduciaries can choose to follow a calendar or fiscal year. Estates and trusts that follow a calendar year must file their tax returns by mid-April; the specific date in 2012 is April 17. Trusts and estates that follow a fiscal year must file Form 1041 by day 15 of the fourth month following the end of each fiscal year.
All businesses must report their annual taxes to IRS. Companies have to choose a tax return according to the type of entity: 1041 series is used to report income by estates and trust, partnerships submit returns from series 1065 and corporations use a variety of forms and schedules in 1120 series.
Transfer taxes are imposed on the passing of title to property from one person (or entity) to another. Gift and estate taxes are both transfer taxes. Transfer taxes can be levied at the federal, state and local levels, depending on the type of property being transferred. States and local municipalities often tax the transfer of legal deeds, certificates and titles to property, while the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) taxes the value of the property itself through gift and estate taxes.
Employment (payroll) taxes
Employers must deposit and report employment taxes. At the end of the year, they must prepare and file Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement to report wages, tips and other compensation paid to an employee. Use Form W-3, Transmittal of Wage and Tax Statements to transmit Forms W-2 to the Social Security Administration.
