Can I get a real ID before my license expires?
A: For people whose driver license or identification card expires between now and the federal deadline of Oct. 1, 2020, the DMV recommends that they wait to apply for their REAL ID at the time of their renewal or within 120 days of the expiration date.
Can I get a real ID before my license expires in MA?
On March 26, customers will have the choice between a REAL ID Driver's License or ID Card or a Standard Massachusetts Driver's License or ID Card. REAL ID will be available on March 26, 2018. However, people will not need a REAL ID until October 2020.
How long does it take to get a real ID in MA?
Receiving Your Mass ID You will be given a temporary Mass ID, valid for 30 days, at the service center, and a permanent Mass ID will be mailed to you within 7 – 10 days.

Does the real ID replace your driver's license?

By October 2020, if you don't have a Real ID or a passport, you will not be able to fly. Starting next fall, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require travelers to present a Real ID compliant driver's license in order to fly domestically.

Come fall 2020, every U.S. air traveler will be required to present a Real ID-compliant license, or another acceptable form of identification such as a U.S. passport, to board a domestic flight.
