You can find veterans' military service records from World War I to the present from the National Personnel Records Center (PRC). These files can include the Report of Separation (DD Form 214) and show a veteran's service history, which may include: Enlistment or appointment and separation dates.
To find someone else's records, you must use Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. The FOIA website of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, www.rcfp.org/foi.html, has detailed information. When you file your FOIA request, ask for all “publicly releasable” information on the veteran in question.
Military personnel records are open to the public 62 years after they leave the military. Records of any veteran who separated from the military 62 (or more) years ago can be ordered by anyone for a copying fee (detailed below under cost). See Access to Military Records by the Public for more details.
To find someone else's records, you must use Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. When you file your FOIA request, ask for all “publicly releasable” information on the veteran in question. The center will not release medical, disciplinary and other records under the FOIA.
Although frequently recorded with the Clerk & Recorder (or similar) DD214s are considered confidential and available only to the veteran — spouse or other next-of-kin cannot receive a DD214. However, the near equivalent information is available from the Official Military Personnel Files (OMP); see below.
Mail or fax a Request Pertaining to Military Records (Standard Form SF 180) to the National Personnel Records Center (PRC). Write a letter to the PRC. Visit the PRC in person. Contact your state or county Veterans agency. Hire an independent researcher.
Ask to see their DD-214 Form, otherwise known as their separation form from the Department of Defense. Use jargon when asking questions. Ask what they did and what their classification number was.
Get Your DD-214 Online It's official, DD-214's are NOW Online. This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of his DD-214 for employment purposes. PRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files.
