Radio waves can be reflected and refracted in a manner similar to light. They are affected by the ground terrain, atmosphere and other objects. Radio waves interact with objects in three principle ways: Reflection A radio wave bounces off an object larger than its wavelength.
This is what gives the Ionosphere its name, and it is the free electrons that cause the reflection and absorption of radio waves. The high frequency waves pass through the ionosphere and escape into space while the low frequency waves reflect off the ionosphere and essentially “skip” around the earth.
Due to the ability of ionized atmospheric gases to refract high frequency (HF, or shortwave) radio waves, the ionosphere can reflect radio waves directed into the sky back toward the Earth. Radio waves directed at an angle into the sky can return to Earth beyond the horizon.
When an electromagnetic wave comes in contact with a solid material, its energy (if high enough) will be absorbed by the atoms of the solid material. The absorption of the energy causes the electrons within the atoms to vibrate.
Radio waves, like all electromagnetic waves, propagate at the speed of light, carrying an equal balance of electric and magnetic energy. In effect, a portion of the energy associated with one of the radio waves bounces off the energy in the other radio wave.
Radio waves, microwaves and at least part of x-Rays do not pass through our body like you state. If radiation passes through a material, that either means that the material has no way of absorbing the energy in that radiation, or that the so-called cross-section is too small.
Radio waves almost always travel through space in a straight line. One is that radio waves are pulled and turn slightly because of gravity when they pass by large masses. The other exception is that radio waves can be reflected by certain substances, like the way that light is reflected by a mirror.
Thin amounts of plastic wrap, wax paper, cotton and rubber are not likely to interfere with radio waves. However, aluminum foil, and other electrically conductive metals such as copper, can reflect and absorb the radio waves and consequently interferes with their transmission.
