Nearly 5,000 hospitals and approximately 10,000 other healthcare organizations are accredited or certified by The Joint Commission. Nearly 200 hospitals and more than 200 other healthcare facilities as well as laboratories are listed on the HEAP Website.
The United States is divided into six accreditation regions: New England, Middle States, North Central, Southern, Western and Northwest. Seven accrediting commissions operate in these regions. All regional accrediting commissions review entire institutions, as opposed to programs or schools within institutions.
The HEAP has been accrediting healthcare facilities for more than 60 years and under Medicare/ Medicaid since its inception. HEAP is also authorized to survey clinical laboratories under CIA.
Accreditation is regarded as one of the key benchmarks for measuring the quality of an organization. Preparing for accreditation gives your organization an opportunity to identify its strengths and areas for improvement.
Quite simply, hospitals pursue accreditation because it is required in order for their organizations to receive payment from federally funded Medicare and Medicaid programs. The Joint Commission accredits more than 4,000 facilities throughout the United States, which accounts for approximately 78 percent of hospitals.
Studies have shown that accreditation improves the overall quality of care in healthcare facilities. In certain specialty areas, accreditation programs even improve patient outcomes. This also improves the quality of care by decreasing variations in the ways different staff members and departments care for patients.
An official designation indication that a healthcare facility is in compliance with the Medicare Condition of Participation, to qualify for deemed status, facilities must be accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations or the American Osteopathic Association.
