By 4 weeks, your baby will respond to your smile, perhaps with a facial expression or a movement. By 3 months, they will smile back at you. By 4 to 6 months, they will turn to you and expect you to respond when upset.
Children who are securely attached typically are visibly upset as their caregivers leave, but they are happy upon their return. These parents react more quickly to their children's needs and are typically more responsive to a child they are securely attached to than one of insecure attachment.
The early signs that a secure attachment is forming are some of a parent's greatest rewards: By 4 weeks, your baby will respond to your smile, perhaps with a facial expression or a movement. By 3 months, they will smile back at you. By 4 to 6 months, they will turn to you and expect you to respond when upset.
People with a secure attachment style tend to be warm, loving, comfortable with closeness and don't worry too much about the status of the relationship. Those with an anxious attachment style crave intimacy but require more reassurance than those with other styles.
Other key characteristics of securely attached individuals include having high self-esteem, enjoying intimate relationships, seeking out social support, and an ability to share feelings with other people.
Secure attachment is classified by children who show some distress when their caregiver leaves but are able to compose themselves knowing that their caregiver will return. Attachment theory explains how the parent-child relationship emerges and provides influence on subsequent behaviors and relationships.
If they are in a situation where they do not receive normal love and care, they cannot develop this close bond. This may result in a condition called attachment disorder. It usually happens to babies and children who have been neglected or abused, or who are in care or separated from their parents for some reason.
Children with poor attachments tend to display poor socioemotional affects, such as, poor social, coping, and problem-solving skills, tantrums, clingy, withdrawn, or aggressive behaviors, etc. These negative effects, often impacts the child throughout their developmental years.
