Easy and Superb!
I love how easy pdfFiller is to use. Also, the results are amazing! I uploaded a signature that looked great from my computer but I couldn't get the page colour right. PdfFiller fixed the colour so that the background of the upload and the entire document were identical. I didn't need to try fixing it myself!

How did settlers claim land?
All the settlers found it easy to get land in the West. In eighteen sixty-two, Congress had passed the Homestead Act. This law gave every citizen, and every foreigner who asked for citizenship, the right to claim government land. ... Without trees, settlers had no wood to build houses.
How did the Land Act of 1820 encourage settlers to move west?

What was a homesteader required to do to improve the land?
The Homestead Act, enacted during the Civil War in 1862, provided that any adult citizen, or intended citizen, who had never borne arms against the U.S. government could claim 160 acres of surveyed government land. Claimants were required to improve the plot by building a dwelling and cultivating the land.

Was the Homestead Act successful?
Not everyone was happy with the Homestead Act. It was not a perfect piece of legislation and several problems developed. In much of the west, 160 acres was just not enough land to sustain a viable farm. Just because it was a “free farm” did not guarantee that the farmer would be successful.
How much land did homesteaders get?
Each homesteader had to live on the land, build a home, make improvements and farm for 5 years before they were eligible to “prove up”. A total filing fee of $18 was the only money required, but sacrifice and hard work exacted a different price from the hopeful settlers.
Why did settlers move west in the 1800s?
Pioneer settlers were sometimes pulled west because they wanted to make a better living. Others received letters from friends or family members who had moved west. These letters often told about a good life on the frontier. The biggest factor that pulled pioneers west was the opportunity to buy land.
Why did people move west in the 1840s?
People started moving West in the 1840s because there was a shortage of arable farmland in the East. Also, there was a large influx of immigration and the Eastern cities were becoming very overcrowded. ... There was even violence being committed against immigrants, so they left the East to escape from it.
When did settlers move west?
Westward expansion, the 19th-century movement of settlers into the American West, began with the Louisiana Purchase and was fueled by the Gold Rush, the Oregon Trail and a belief in “manifest destiny.”
