Can Jack posts be permanent?

Generally, only single-piece posts are approved for permanent use. This type of post is steel and hollow. The multiple-piece posts are almost always smaller than 3" in diameter and are only temporary-rated posts. These go by various names including 'jack posts' and 'ally columns'.

Are Ally columns permanent?

Ally columns can be either temporary or permanent. Permanent columns are sometimes used under a house, in the crawlspace or basement, to shore up the structure. Because one type of ally column is non-adjustable, the steel column must be cut to fit the needed space.

How much does it cost to replace Ally columns?

The cost typically starts at around $2,500 and increases depending on the number of columns and the span/size of the existing and required beams. The price is also affected by whether the existing beam is flush or drop. An accurate estimate will be given to you on site once the existing conditions are noted.

How far apart should Ally columns be?

There are 4 columns, and they are spaced 7' in from the side foundation walls and 7' feet apart.

How do I get rid of Ally columns?

Expect it to be expensive. They would need to temporarily install 2 main beams and temporary adjustable/screw type lolly columns on either side of the existing main beam, remove the main beam, replace with steel i-beam. Then deal with the concrete at each end of the beam to hold it in place.

Are screw jacks permanent?
