What is a check, and how does it work? A check is a written order on a credit union, bank, or savings institution, by the account owner, payable on demand to the person named on the check (payee), to that person's order, or the bearer. The check is drawn on funds on deposit in the account owner's checking account.
A cashier's check (or cashier's check) is a check guaranteed by a bank, drawn on the bank's own funds and signed by a cashier. A customer asks a bank for a cashier's check, and the bank debits the amount from the customer's account immediately and assumes the responsibility for covering the cashier's check.
To get a cashier's check, determine the name of the payee and the exact amount you need the check to be. Next, visit your bank branch to pay for the check with funds from your checking account or visit a location where you can buy the check with cash. Give the payee name, check amount, and your ID to the teller.
Most checks will clear in 48 hours. The funds for the cashiers check are credited to your account immediately on deposit, but your bank may put a hold on those funds to make sure the check clears the paying bank. Even when the hold is removed and the funds are available, the check may not have cleared.
If you don't have a bank account: You can walk into any bank or credit union and ask for a cashier's check. However, some institutions only issue checks for customers, so you may have to try several locations (or open an account). You could also try a money order instead, if the payee allows it.
Cashier's checks, also known as teller's checks, are checks that draw on the bank's own funds to make the payment. They're as good as money in the bank because, well, they are the bank's money in the bank. Once a bank creates a cashier's check, the bank guarantees to pay the amount printed on the check.
When you pay with a check, the funds typically don't leave your account until your payee's bank requests the money from your bank. That bank will then request payment by forwarding a copy of the check (or the check itself) to your bank. When your bank pays the other bank, the funds are removed from your account.
Anytime you write a check and there is not enough money in the account to pay it, it will be returned for Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) which is the technical term for what's known as a bounced check.
