Where is AMI used?
An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is an image that provides the software that is required to set up and boot an Amazon EC2 instance. Each AMI also contains a block device mapping that specifies the block devices to attach to the instances that you launch. You must specify an AMI when you launch an instance.
How do you ensure AMI is secure?
AMIs must not contain authorized passwords or authorized keys. AMIs must not use fixed passwords for administrative access. AMIs must use a randomized password instead. An alternative implementation is to retrieve the instance metadata and use the instance_id as the password.
Does deregistering an AMI delete it?
When you deregister an AMI, Amazon EC2 permanently deletes it. After you deregister an AMI, you can't use it to launch new instances. You might consider deregistering an AMI when you have finished using it. To protect against accidental or malicious deregistering of an AMI, you can turn on deregistration protection.
How to check if AMI is being used?
If the filtering process returns one or more Amazon EC2 instances as result, the selected image is currently in use. If the filtering process does not return any EC2 instances, the selected Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is not used anymore and can be safely removed from your AWS cloud account.
