What if I can't get a DMV appointment before my license expires?
The DMV sends license renewal notices about 60 days before the expiration date, but if you wait until you get the notice, you might not get an appointment before it expires. Try to make an appointment 90 days, or at least 60 days, before the expiration date.
Can you walk into the DMV to renew your license?
In-Person Renewal Process Visit the DMV in-person. You can walk in, but we strongly recommend getting an appointment ahead of time. Complete the Driver License Application form DL44. Give your thumbprint.
Do you need an appointment to renew your driver's license?
In order to renew your license in person, you will need to be sure you do a few things: Go to your local DMV office (make an appointment to save yourself some time). Fill out a California Driver License or Identification Card Application form (DL 44 or DL 44C). This form must be an original, not a copy.

Don't go on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays: For many DMV offices, your best bet for fast service is to hit up the office on Wednesday or Thursday. The beginning and end of the week it traditionally the busiest time.
