Microsoft provides a way of creating a new, blank text file using the right-click menu in File Explorer. Open File Explorer and navigate to the folder where you want to create the text file. Right-click in the folder and go to New > Text Document. The text file is given a default name, New Text Document.
.txt files are reasonably safe because they do not provide any mechanism to include code, scripts, or macros that would be executed when the file is opened. As long as you open the file with a basic text editor (like Notepad in Windows), then .txt files should not pose any risk to you.
Navigate to the folder or desktop, you would like to create your file. For example, My Documents. Right-click an empty section of the folder window or desktop. Select “New” from the context menu. Select the type of file you'd like to create. Enter a name for the newly created file. Open the new file to edit it.
Quickly Create a New Text Document Anywhere with the Right-Click > W > T Shortcut. Windows: Rather than opening Notepad, going to the File menu to save it, then browsing to a specific folder, you can more quickly create a text file in your chosen folder by right-clicking then hitting W and then T.
Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Open. In the File of type list, click OpenDocument Text. Click the file you want to open, and then click Open.
Click File, click Open, select the text file, and then click Open. If you don't see the file, select All Files or Text Documents from the pull-down menu above the Open button. Click File, and then click Save As. In the menu next to Save As Type, select Microsoft Word 2007/2010/2013 XML (.docx).
Open Microsoft Word, press “Ctrl-O,” locate the file you want to open and double-click the file to open it from within Microsoft Word. Open Microsoft Word, click the “File” tab and select the file under Recent Documents to open a document you recently opened in Word.
Click the arrow to the right of the “Files of type” heading and select the “Word for Windows (*. Doc)” option from the drop-down menu. Locate the . Doc file you want to open on the computer's hard drive, highlight it and click the “Open” button to open the document in the Worded program.
Another way to create a text file is to right-click on your desktop screen and in the menu that appears, click New and then click Text Document. Creating a text file this way opens your default text editor with a blank text file on your desktop. You can change the name of the file to anything you want.
