Both a COI and an Evidence of Property Insurance (EPI) describe insurance coverage, but a Certificate of Insurance describes liability coverage while an Evidence of Property Insurance describes property coverage. An Evidence of Property Insurance form describes property coverage using the 27 & 28 forms.
A certificate of insurance (COI) is issued by an insurance company or broker and verifies the existence of an insurance policy. Small business owners and contractors typically require a COI that grants protection against liability for workplace accidents or injuries to conduct business.
For example, one field is labeled “certificate holder.” The certificate holder is the party the certificate of insurance is provided to. So if you're hiring someone, and you requested the COI, then you're the certificate holder.
COIs are much shorter documents than policies as they are really just summarizing the key points of coverage. COIs exist to help individuals and clients verify a policyholder's coverage and ensure that it meets their standards.
Like an Additional Insured, a certificate holder is a third party that may be named on your COI. Unlike an Additional Insured, however, a certificate holder has no protection or coverage under the policy. Therefore, a certificate holder cannot file a claim under the policy.
The insurer issues policies which outline coverage. An insurance policy is a contract between the insured and the insurance company.
Why use certificates of insurance? Convenience is the driving force behind COIs. It is easier to obtain, review, and store a COI than a certified copy of an insurance policy. No confidential or proprietary business information is included.
The policyholder can issue certificates of insurance for the beneficiaries to use as evidence of insurance. A master policy can be for a group insurance policy, such as group health or group life insurance.
Two pivotal documents often required are the Certificate of Insurance (COI) and Evidence of Property Insurance (EOI). Though both serve as proof of insurance coverage, they cater to different needs—one focusing on liability and the other on property protection.
In short, evidence of insurance and certificates of insurance are very similar in that they are both types of proof of insurance. The main difference is that one should be used for first person coverages and the other for third person coverages.
