Is accreditation or certification mandatory? No. Health care organizations, programs, and services voluntarily pursue accreditation and certification.
The Joint Commission is one of several organizations approved by CMS to certify hospitals. If a hospital is certified by The Joint Commission, they are deemed eligible to receive Medicare and/or Medicaid reimbursement. However, a hospital that is compliant with CMS is not necessarily accredited by The Joint Commission.
Accreditation by an AO is voluntary and is not required for Medicare certification or participation in the Medicare Program. A provider's or supplier's ability to bill Medicare for covered services is not impacted if it chooses to discontinue accreditation from a CMS-approved AO or change AOS.
Hospitals seek Joint Commission accreditation because it: Strengthens community confidence in the quality and safety of care, treatment and services. Provides a competitive edge in the marketplace. Improves risk management and risk reduction. Helps organize and strengthen patient safety efforts.
Goal of accreditation for healthcare organizations Ultimately, the purpose of accreditation in healthcare is to strengthen your organization and prove that you provide high-quality care. Achieving and maintaining accreditation provides benchmarks for measuring how your organization is doing.
Quite simply, hospitals pursue accreditation because it is required in order for their organizations to receive payment from federally funded Medicare and Medicaid programs. The Joint Commission accredits more than 4,000 facilities throughout the United States, which accounts for approximately 78 percent of hospitals.
Approximately 82 percent of the nation's hospitals (including critical access hospitals) are currently accredited by The Joint Commission. The Joint Commission has been accrediting freestanding laboratories since 1995. Today, the Joint Commission accredits nearly 2,000 organizations providing laboratory services.
The Joint Commission is not a complete monopoly, and while many states in the U.S. make use of their services, they are not used by all. In California, The Joint Commission is part of a joint survey process with state authorities.
